.

Personal experiences include: Surviving cancer and three life-threatening medical errors including a misdiagnosis. She has been a family caregiver and patient advocate for her husband since his crisis in 2003 – the day that he was told he might not live through the night because he was in kidney failure — that inspired the first edition of her book Lead Your Way to Better Healthcare.

Patient Advocate

She continues as a patient advocate for her husband, friends and family. While doing so, all of the health record forms in her books were created at the point of need and from a patient’s perspective because she quickly realized people need more than just health record forms to use. They need to have the forms capture information in a meaningful way and know how to use the information compiled in them to obtain better medical care and prevent misdiagnosis and other medical errors.

.

She has also volunteered for CareSpark, a non-profit organization in NE Tennessee & SW Virginia. CareSpark is building one of the nation’s premier Electronic Medical Record Systems to link and make patient records available at all times to all providers. She was an observer/advisor to the Consumer Perspective Workgroup of the National Health Information Network (NHIN), as part of the national electronic medical records effort.  Currently she is working with the North Carolina’s Consumer Advisory Council for Healthcare Information (CACHI). She spoke at the ARC National Convention in Albuquerque, NM in November 2008.

She was one of fifty patient advocate / activist invited to attend the First Summit for Patient Advocate / Activist and Partners in Quality and Safety held at the 22nd Annual National Forum on Quality Improvement in Health Care in Orlando, FL December, 2010.

She belongs to the Winston-Salem Chamber of Commerce, is a member of the Society for Participatory Medicine and the National Speakers Association.
